Home Theatre Speakers - A Simple Buying Technique

!: Home Theatre Speakers - A Simple Buying Technique

Home Theatre Speakers come in a wide variety of choices, so wide in fact that making a choice can be very difficult. Unless you have spent many long hours reading about the different options for creating a home cinema system, you probably won't have a clue where to begin.

Home theater speakers are usually bought as part of a packaged home cinema system. Sometimes however you may decide to build that system by buying the separate components. This can be a great way to save money and improve the quality of the system within your budget. As you start your research you will no doubt be overwhelmed by the array of choices to make. There is a simple method you can use to buy the best quality within your budget.

This method is for buying the best home theatre speakers for your budget. You can use this method to research many other components such as home theatre systems or home theatre projectors, wireless speakers and surround sound systems. In fact it can help you to buy many different products but is especially suited to the home electronics market.

Where would you find one of the largest retailers of home electronics, in fact by far the largest online retailer - Amazon of course. We can use Amazon to do our research very easily, and you will probably end up buying from them in the end. Here is the theory.

Go to the site and enter the search term for "home theater speakers". When the results come up look to the top right hand corner where there is a drop down box that says "sort by". You can choose relevance, best selling, price and average customer review. We can use these filters to refine our search. Also look to the left hand panel of the site, for more options such as by brand, price range, new or used, customer review ranges and more.

Once I have refined my search by relevance and price I will look at the customer reviews and best selling results. If an item is in Amazon's best selling range it is good. Poor products simply do not become best sellers in their categories in Amazon. This is in part because of the customer review system that is used by savvy buyers.

Think about the review system. Have a read through some of the reviews for speaker systems and see how detailed and well written some of them are. You can learn a lot, quickly by reading a few reviews. For someone to take the time and effort to write a review about the speakers they have bought - they need to have some form of motivation. Either the product is great or it is poor. People simply don't bother about just OK. Now, added to that, if a product has a lot of excellent reviews on Amazon, this is another strong indicator of it's quality and value.

So to sum up, we want to refine the search results to find the best selling product with excellent reviews and a lot of them. This is our golden target but of course our personal preferences count.

This system is great for narrowing down your search and for finding out about specific products and what buyers think of them. Use the available resources and you will be on your way to finding the perfect home theatre speakers.

DALI Speakers - Craftsmanship and Quality Engineering For Perfect Sound

!: DALI Speakers - Craftsmanship and Quality Engineering For Perfect Sound

When looking for home theater speakers, consider a name brand manufacturer like DALI. The company is a leader in making high-end speakers that are considered the best in their class in terms of performance and price.

DALI, or Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries, began in 1983 as part of a major Scandinavian audio retail chain. The company's mission was to provide the type sound purity and quality not found in products of other speaker manufacturers. DALI established its first sound laboratory and factory in Norager in 1986 where the headquarters still resides today. The company quickly became one of the most respected makers of audio equipment in the world. Their success is attributed in large part to company's dedication to research and ground-up engineering which led to such major product lines as Megaline. The company also took on the manufacturing of its own line of audio cables and interconnects in an effort to streamline their manufacturing and ensure the type of quality they demanded for their speakers.

DALI opened a North American factory sales office in Colorado in 2003 and a third manufacturing and sales office was built in the United Kingdom in 2005. All three facilities continue the tradition of high-end, craftsman-built speakers.

The manufacturing techniques used in DALI products are unique. The company gave up assembly line manufacturing many years ago. Instead they use two person stations where each oversees the production of the single piece of equipment from beginning to end. The craftsmen, many who have worked for the company since its inception, hone and check each product for quality. Manufacturers on the floor are encouraged to help with the decision making and development of the speakers. The company uses the best materials possible so that both engineering and quality craftsmanship principles come together to create the company's visually and audibly superior speakers.

The principles of sound and its purity are still the driving mission of DALI today. The company has rigorous standards on fidelity, low resonance, synchronization, surround sound, and linear impedance. Each line is built from the ground up with these factors in mind. DALI does not use printed circuit boards in its speakers. That is because their audio engineers believe that the boards distort and lose subtle sounds. All of their speakers are therefore hardwired by hand. Crossovers are custom built and fitted for each loudspeaker made. The result is a highly efficient internal network that reduces latency and compression.

Low quality home theater speakers must often be placed in very specific locations in order to get optimal sound results. DALI speakers are designed to produce the same quality of sound no matter where the listener is in relation the loudspeaker. The components disperse sound in a convenient and natural way to optimize performance. DALI believes that a listener should not be able to distinguish which speaker sounds are coming from. This kind of clarity is achieved through well-chosen materials, which do not hinder sound at the cost of fashion.

DALI takes pride in its reputation for finely crafted and great-sounding home theater speakers. Their masterpieces of engineering and handmade craftsmanship will surely not disappoint.

Subwoofer Placement Guide - Home Theater Speakers - Down and Dirty Quick Tips

!: Subwoofer Placement Guide - Home Theater Speakers - Down and Dirty Quick Tips

Step 1. If you've just arrived home from work, and you're wearing your new 00 suit, you'll want to change into something more comfortable. i.e. jeans and a t-shirt.

Step 2. Find your favorite listening position. If this is on a couch, and you would also like your couch partner to enjoy your subwoofer as best as possible, sit just between those two listening positions.

Step 3. Gather some sturdy stuffed pillows and or folded blankets for stability. More on that in a minute. (why not just an end table or box?) see appendix A below...

Step 4. If you happen to have an extra long subwoofer cable or rca that will work, get it and plug it into your subwoofer. Your subwoofer will need to be able to play while positioned in your listening seat at ear level. You wouldn't sit backwards in your listening position, so be sure your subwoofer is firing towards your tv or receiver area. Be sure to also plug in your subwoofer to your wall outlet.

Step 5. Stack up the pillows/blankets etc, in a stable fashion. One can be placed behind where your head would be in your listening position to help stabilize your subwoofer from hitting the wall behind it if your couch backs up to a wall. If not, use your best judgment on what is stable, just remember NO hard objects...

Step 6. Put your subwoofer on top of the pillows/blankets at approx. ear height from your normal seated position.

Step 7. Play some bass heavy (although dynamic with low and middle bass) music or your favorite sequence of a movie that you would really like to have shine when being played during a normal listening/watching session.

Step 8. Get on your knees and crawl around your room, literally. Be careful not to trip over any speaker wire, HDMI Cables, or RCA Cables in the process. Go over to where your subwoofer was originally positioned and move towards and away from the wall while listening. Move toward the outer wall or toward the center of the room. Keep in mind all the while that you are searching to hear where the low frequency output is smooth, but still extended, and not a single one-note boom, but remember s-m-o-o-t-h is what you're listening for. One that sounds natural, and extended to the lowest of low's and highest of mid-bass.

Step 9. The position where you are searching may be on your side wall, front wall, to the side of your listening position, or even way in the back/side/front of your room. Just keep in mind that where ever your head is, is where you subwoofer will ultimately be placed. If the position is not suitable to place a subwoofer for whatever reason you will have to find the next best compromise. Leave something on the floor as a marker to remember all of these places and quickly walk over, crouch down, and give each place a listen during your best sounding experiences and pick a spot that is suitable for aesthetics etc.

Step 10. Plunk down your subwoofer where you found your best spot during a variety of listening materials and you're all set. Return back to your listening position and enjoy your new smooth sounding subwoofer that neither has room boom, or any empty spots in audio playback!

appendix A: Using a hard object such as an end table etc may be easier to place your subwoofer at ear level in your listening position, but it will not be the best way. Think about this; we are simply reversing the sound travel of your subwoofer to go from point B to A. This sound bounces and reflects off of several objects between those two points, one being your body itself during normal listening sessions. If you use a hard object to place your subwoofer in your listening position, you are introducing something that will not be there when you actually place your subwoofer in it's final position. Your body isn't hard and reflective, therefore the objects that you place under your subwoofer to elevate it to ear level shouldn't be reflective either, hence the pillows/blankets. On a side note, we will not be responsible for anyone dropping their favorite shiny brand new subwoofer on their floor/foot/cat etc...so build your listening position elevation rationally and as stable as possible!

Home Theater Speakers - Design and Style

!: Home Theater Speakers - Design and Style

With over 500 models of home theater speakers available through a generous number of high and low-end brands, many consumers rely on salesperson to lead them in the right direction. Consumers with only a limited budget will undoubtedly flock to the cheapest option available to suit there needs. This however, nearly always results in a less than ideal sound system that fails to meet the expectations or needs of the owner. It is therefore a good idea to educate one's self on the best brands, speaker styles and specifications that will fit a home's needs before making a choice.

A home theater speaker system is typically made up of a front speaker, left and right speaker, a center-channel speaker, a pair of surrounds, and a subwoofer. A home owner may mix-and-match components but help from a professional is advised to make sure the speakers are all compatible. These speaker types come in varying sizes, sound output and design. The following are the types of styles in which these speakers may be found:

Floor-Standing speakers are the largest home theater speakers available. They can be shifted around the theater area or be moved to another home.

Bookshelf or Cabinet speakers stand independently, just like floor standing speakers, but are smaller and can be placed on or in entertainment centers or shelving to save space.

In-Wall speakers require no floor space, and can disappear if matching the walls. Their quality is usually very good, but they need professional installation and wiring.

On-Wall speakers are recommended for use with a flat-panel television. They provide exceptional sound as well as a pleasing aesthetic component.

Home theater owners or designers must determine the listening requirements and preferences for a specific room in order to create a quality home theater space. Room size and layout are important factors as this will dictate the speaker configuration. Logistics like electrical outlet placement, room size, and usable room space strongly affect the type of equipment that can and should be put in the room.

Home theater speakers are available in many sizes. However not all sizes are meant for all rooms. Large speakers are not advantageous for small rooms because they will need to be played at a much lower volume. This may cause distortion to the audio. Lower quality small speakers used in large spaces may produce a tinny or thin sound if they are unable to produce enough sound at a decent output level. Speakers of similar size may differ greatly in their sound output or reproduce different levels of sound unequally so it is very important to listen to various speaker brands and sizes and compare them before buying.

Speakers are available in a variety of encasement types - natural or laminated wood, metal, and occasionally plastic, but often preferences may be limited by brand or model. Speakers are as varied as tennis shoes so make sure you try on several and know how they fit into your home theater before making a purchase.

Home Theater Design: Optimum Speaker Placement

The accepted theater arrangement is of policy a screen at one end of the room, with one central Speaker, one Speaker to each side of the screen, two Speakers providing surround left and right, and sometimes a Speaker providing surround rear. If you have your room arranged this way, chances are good that you call it your home theater, and speaker placement is fairly simple for you. The ideal placement has the front speakers at the same height from the ground, normally whether slightly above or slightly below the display, and the surround speakers at least 60cm above the heads of the viewers.

The front center speaker should ideally be in the same position as the screen; the front left and right speakers should be placed roughly 25 degrees to the left and right of the direction the viewers face, and about the same distance from the viewers; the surround left and surround right speakers should be 90 degrees to the left and right of this direction, and, again, about the same distance from the viewers; and the surround rear, as its name suggests, should be directly behind the viewers. A subwoofer if used can theoretically be placed in any place in the room.

Home Theater Speakers

For many people, and I include myself in this, the found of your home is such that it does not comfortably permit a room set up in this way. After all, unless you are very lucky, the chances are that the room that contains your home theater equipment doubles as your living room, and you will not want it to be dominated by a screen. You may not wish to call it your home theater as such. To solve this problem, you need to draw a scale diagram of your room. Add your intended screen placement to the drawing, along with the seating arrangements (your sofas and chairs), and recognize where population will be sitting when they watch movies, and the direction in which they will be looking.

Home Theater Design: Optimum Speaker Placement

The next thing you need to do is to draw a line from each viewer directly to the screen, which shows the direction in which each viewer faces. Then draw a line angled 25 degrees to the left of the line you have just drawn from the viewer, for each viewer, until it meets the wall. If the speaker is placed in any place along that line, then it will be at the correct angle for the accepted viewer. You need to recognize a point along the wall fairly close to the position at which these lines reach the wall. This will normally be somewhere near the middle of the collection of lines. You have then identified the optimum home theater placement for your front left speaker.

You now need to do the same thing, but angle the lines 25 degrees to the right of the direction in which the viewers face. With these lines you can recognize the optimum home theater placement for the front right speaker.

Repeat for lines angled 90 degrees to the left, 90 degrees to the right, and 180 degrees (a continuation of the line from viewer to screen, but in reverse). With these lines, you can recognize the optimum home theater placement for the surround left speaker, the surround right speaker, and the surround rear speaker.

Ideally, the front left and right speakers should be placed at the same distance from each viewer, as should the surround left and right speakers. This will normally not be potential to achieve, so it should be approximated. Far more leading are the speaker placement angles for each viewer, which should ideally not be more than about 15 degrees away from the optimum position. Optimum home theater speaker placement depends on minimizing the angle error for each viewer.

Your subwoofer could be placed theoretically at any point in the room, because the ear cannot genuinely determine the direction of low-frequency sounds. However, you may find that positioning the subwoofer at different parts of the room turn the sounds from the subwoofer; some frequencies may be amplified, while others may be reduced, especially if the subwoofer is placed near a wall or angle of the room. It is recommend that you experiment with the placement of your subwoofer until you find a position that you like.

Some other considerations may influence the position in which you place the speakers. You will not want your speakers in a position where they obstruct a path that is normally walked through, e.g. Too close to a doorway. Also, if you do not have magnetically-shielded front speakers, they should not be placed too close to a cathode ray tube (old-style) Tv, because they will cause the color Syn. Clearness of the display to be affected. This does not apply to Lcd or plasma televisions. Using this approach, you can successfully place your speakers in such a way that you can be proud of your home theater and of your living room at the same time!

Always remember that the idea behind home theater is to set your ideas up so that you can enjoy movies to the fullest. Some population lose sight of this goal. Whatever you do with your home theater design, don't fall into the trap of over-analyzing your results. Start enjoying those movies!
